M.A. Applications | fall 2009

The application date for entry into the MA Program in Linguistics is 30 March - 10 April 2009. Applications should be made to the Institute of Postgraduate Studies (Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü) and all administrative issues should be adressed to them. For questions concerning the selection procedure please contact Didar Akar akar@boun.edu.tr. The written exam will be held on Thursday, May 7th, the oral exam on the following day, Friday May 8th. (Rooms to be announced).

Please note that there will only be one selection procedure for the academic year 2009-2010. All the prospective applicants should therefore take the exam on May 7th.

(Likewise, there will only be one entrance exam for the PhD programme, taking place at the beginning of August. Details to follow.)

Admission

Student holding B.A./B.S. degrees are eligible to apply for the M.A./M.S. programs, and those holding M.A./M.S. degrees are eligible to apply for the Ph.D. programs offered by the Institutes of Bogazici University.

Requirements

1. M.A Program
      a. LES score (alternatively GRE or GMAT scores).
         b. An undergraduate grade point average, specified for each program by the relevant Institute.
         c. Proof of English Proficiency.*
Final admissions will be granted after the applicants are evaluated in their own subject by department.
*Students should have taken one of the tests listed below and obtained the minimum scores indicated.

2. Ph. D. Program
      a. LES score (alternatively GRE or GMAT scores).
         b. An M.A./M.S. grade point average, specified for each program by the relevant Institute.
         c. Proof of English Proficiency.*

All applicants are required to take an entrance examination in their own subject, given by the department they are applying to, in September and/or February.

3. English Language Requirement
Applicants who have failed the BUEPT, but have a knowledge of “intermediate” level English, and have been successful in their “subject” exams, upon the request of the executive committee of the relevant institute, are admitted to the English Language Program for one year only. These students may start their graduate studies upon successful completion of their English Language programs. Students with “beginner” level English are not admitted to the English Language Programs. Furthermore, students applying in January will not be admitted to the English Language Programs.
4. Necessary Documents

           a. Official transcripts, sent directly to the Bogazici University Registrar's Office by the university from which the applicant has                       graduated. The documents should include all the courses taken and all the grades received throughout the applicant's                                  undergraduate and/or M.A./M.S. programs.
           b. Two reference letters from persons familiar with the applicant's academic performance.
           c. An official document indicating the applicant's disciplinary record at the university he/she has graduated**.
           d. Photocopy of the diploma.

** Only when applying from a Turkish University.
